Laser Ceramic Scribing System

laser system for scribing ceramic substrates used in hybrid circuits

Back to semiconductor index

LS Laser Systems has released a laser scriber for scribing ceramic substrates. This is particularly aimed at lower volume hybrid circuit manufacturers who would like to keep control of their manufacturing in-house rather than buying in pre-scribed substrates. In some situations it is necessary to scribe The ceramic substrate after print and fire and in such cases sub-contract scribing is far less practical and cost effective. The LS laser scribing system utilises a Coherent 150 watt sealed beam CO2 laser. It makes use of the same Windows-based software that is used in the LS laser trimmers. This software offers full graphics capability so that the laser scriber could also be used to mark the ceramic substrates.

Description of LS Laser Systems Model 150 Ceramic Scriber

1. CO2-Laser

The beam source is a sealed off CO2-Laser. The output power can be adjusted continuously to meet the requirements of the application. Due to its design, this laser has no consumable parts that need regular replacement.

Guaranteed Performance

Output Power   150 W

M 2   1,5 (K>0.67)

Power Range   5 to 150 W

Pulse Frequency   0 to 100 KHz

Typical Performance

Peak Effective Power   375 W

Pulse Energy Range   5 to 300 mJ

Pulse Rise & Fall Time   <70 µsec

Power Stability 2   +/- 10 %Wavelength   10,2 - 10.7 µm

2. Focusing Optics

The focussing optics with beam expander is fix mounted on the laser rail.

The laser beam is guided via an adjustable mirror to the focussing lens.

The optimal focus can be adjusted by focus mounting.

A beam expansion (Galilean-principal) gives a small focal spot with a good depth of focus.

Focal length:   f=2,5"

Gas jet:       3mm diameter

Compressed Air:   2,5 bar

Adjustable:   +/- 4mm

3. X/Y- Coordinate Table

For maximum speed and accuracy the table is driven and positioned with 2 phase step motors.

Step and Repeat Table:   Ball lining precision slide drive

Resolution:   25 µm

Repeatability:   30 µm/axis

Speed:     max. 200 mm/s

Acceleration:   10m/s²

Traversing range:   200 mm below slides (x)

    250 mm above slides (y)

4. Software LS-2000

The system includes a software package for Windows platforms. All parameters are given in functional blocks with different properties. The software package includes the following:

5. System Concept

•  The LS-150 is a laser scribing system
•  The laser unit with focusing optics is mounted on a precision linear guidance. The focus distance

can be fine adjusted by a micrometer screw (standard).

•  Laser, deflection unit with a camera and workstation are enclosed in a protective housing.
•  The whole front side of the working area can be opened in the manual mode.
•  The system concept is prepared to adapt an automatic loading system.
•  The workstation is accessible via a slide at the front of the machine. This slide is provided with an interlock-switch, which interrupts the laser beam via a safety-shutter when it is opened.
•  The circuits are held by mechanical clamps, The standard holder is constructed up to 4"x4".
•  The complete system is based and mounted on a profile frame. Within this profile frame the personal computer, laser power supply, and motor control are mounted.
•  There is an internal exhaust jig to remove dust to an external port.

The complete system corresponds according to DIN EN 60825/VDE 0837 respectively VGB 93 to laser safety-class 1.
